Lye (sodium hydroxide) is essential for making any true soap — it’s the ingredient that transforms oils into soap through a chemical reaction called saponification. But here’s the key point your customers will want to know:
When soap is properly made and fully cured, no lye remains in the final product.
Here’s how that happens:
1. Lye and oils react immediately
When lye water is mixed with oils, the molecules bond together.
The lye begins breaking apart the fats and turning them into:
• soap
• glycerin (a natural moisturizer)
This reaction uses up the lye.
2. Saponification continues for the next 24–48 hours
During this time, the mixture thickens, hardens, and completes the chemical transformation.
By the end of this stage, the lye has been chemically converted — it no longer exists as lye.
